National signing day is upon us and big things have already happened today. This is the time of the year when coaches gather in their war room and some scream like sixth grade girls happy to receive those letter of intents from recruits. There have been a lot of surprises, the usual teams at the top, and other teams that have just found disappointment this recruiting season. Here at fifth-quarter we will give you a recap of what has happened so far.
The Crimson Tide finished ranked #1 in the rivals recruiting rankings in 2011 and 2012. Right now currently they are #1 in the rivals ranking and that does not look like it will change. With Alabama’s success on the field it shows that stars have some kind of relevant ranking to them unlike what many think. The class is headlined by three 5 stars Reuben Foster (straight from Auburn, Alabama), O.J. Howard, and Jonathan Allen. Currently The Tide have 23 commitments with twelve 4 stars and eight 3 stars to round up the class.
The Seminoles have been recruiting at the top level for around thirty years now and have not let up. FSU received a nice surprise today in five star Matthew Thomas LB from Miami, FL. Not to mention grabbing 5 star defensive back Jalen Ramsey from Southern Cal. They did miss out on four star offensive lineman Denver Kirkland who is high school teammates with Matthew Thomas as Arkansas grabbed him. They did find a gem in Davarez Bryant that only them and Purdue were after.
Ole Miss finished #40 in the rivals recruiting rankings just last year! This year it is totally different as it seems big changes are coming in Oxford and changes geared for success. They managed to grab the #1 recruit in all of the nation and the #1 wide receiver. They even managed to go places like Prattville, Alabama taking Offensive Tackle Austin Golson straight out of the Crimson Tide and Auburn Tiger’s back yard. Anytime you can get a kid to choose you over the defending national champions your doing something right!
Not many can remember the last time Texas was not in the top 20 as far as recruiting rankings and not even grabbing a five star. This class is solid for Texas but not what the Longhorns are use too. I guess thats what happens when your arch rival emerges to greatness from this past season and your still in a slump.
