From Riches to Rags is the cliché that explains the Southern Miss situation the best at this point. After the 2011 season things were going great with a CUSA Championship, 12 win season, and a Hawaii Bowl win. Then all of a sudden The North Carolina Tar Heels came a knocking and took away head coach Larry Fedora. In 2012 Ellis Johnson took over operations and he had the worse of luck. The Golden Eagles failed to win a single game in 2012, going winless for the first time EVER. What can Golden Eagle fans look forward to this next year?
Southern Miss hasn’t had a losing season since 1993, much less winless! The fans have been spoiled for being a mid major school and have THE most successful program in the state of Mississippi in my opinion.
Southern Miss quarterback Anthony Alford matured a little bit last year playing in nine games showing his dual threat skills. The stats were not there for Alford as he only completed 44% of his passes but the potential is there. Hopefully the second year quarterback will have more to work with.
Alford will be coached by Todd Monken the guy who engineered the Oklahoma State high power offense. A new head coach should work wonders as this guy comes from a winning background and no one sees him going winless.
The out of conference schedule is going to be rough but exciting for fans. A well improved USM team should go out and atleast be competitors and finish teams off when the win is in grasp. The out of conference schedule includes Nebraska, Texas State, Arkansas, and Boise State.
Expect to see the Southern Miss of old very soon, so regional teams better watch out, even the big boys.
