Albany vs. Old Dominion

Albany (1-3, 0-1 CAA) is led by head coach Bob Ford, who is in his 41st year with a record of 255-158 (.617), which puts him in first place for wins among active FCS coaches.

The Great Danes are a well established program that moved to the CAA this season after playing in the Northeastern Conference for 14 years, and shared the NEC Championship title for the last two years.

Albany is coming off a tough loss to Central Connecticut State, losing 20-17 after a late field goal put CCSU up for good. Albany has yet to log a win in their brand new 8,500 seat stadium.

The Great Danes are a relatively young team with 45 freshmen and redshirt freshmen, compared to 15 seniors and 17 juniors.

Key Roster Spots:

Junior QB Will Fiacchi (6′-3″, 200 lbs) is 69-for-126 for 847 yards with 3 TDs and 3 INTs. Fiacchi went 12-for-21 for 140 yards without a touchdown or an interception in last week’s loss. Albany turned more to the running game once it began raining in the third quarter.

The rushing attack is led by Junior Omar Osbourne (6′-1″, 195 lbs), with 546 yards on 110 attempts and 6 touchdowns, good for roughly 5 yards per attempt. Last week he recorded his second 100-yard rushing game this season, rushing 32 times for 119 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Two seniors lead the receiving corps. Kevin Chillis (5′-9″, 175 lbs) has 20 receptions for 284 and 3 touchdowns this season. Last week he was quiet with only 2 catches for 15 yards. On the other side of the offense, Jameel Gay (5′-11″, 165 lbs) has 12 catches for 210 yards. He was also shut down last week with 2 catches for 50 yards, but one of those catches was a last second Hail Mary attempt that went for 40 yards.

The Albany Great Danes might be better than their record shows. If you want a better idea on how they are rated compared to ODU:, one of the ranking sites posted earlier on odubleedblue, ranked ODU #145 and Albany #208 out of 252.

This one is a bit tougher to predict, but I’m not expecting a shootout with 3 surprise onside kicks this Saturday. ODU should be favored to win, but the Monarch defense is notorious for making any competent offense look great.

For what it’s worth, Drew’s prediction: ODU 38, Albany 31.
